Is the residency self-directed?
Yes. The residency is self-directed, which means there is no fixed schedule or programme. Residents are responsible for managing their own time, work plan, and project development.
Where do residents stay?
Residents stay in shared artist houses in the village, about a five-minute walk from the centre. Each resident has a private bedroom and shares the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and other common spaces with housemates.
What is provided in the accommodation?
We provide:
- bed linen
- towel
- toilet paper
- cleaning products
- laundry detergent
- internet access
Residents are expected to clean during their stay and leave the accommodation in an orderly state on departure.
Can I bring a partner or guest?
Yes, but only by prior arrangement with a team member. Guests can stay for up to 5 nights in the same room as the resident.
How do I get to Stöðvarfjörður?
Most residents arrive via Keflavík International Airport, continue to Reykjavík, and then fly domestically to Egilsstaðir.
Stöðvarfjörður is around 630 km from Reykjavík. It is also possible to travel by bus, ferry, or rental car, depending on the season and your plans.

Do you provide airport pickup?
Yes. We provide pickup from Egilsstaðir Airport on the 1st and 2nd day of the residency period, based on morning flights, and drop-off on the last day, also based on a morning flight.
Please check residency dates carefully before booking travel and confirm your arrival details with us in advance. If travel details are not provided in time, we may not be able to arrange the transfer.
Is local transport available?
Yes. We provide one ride per week to the nearest supermarket.
What should I know about workshop access?
Access to facilities and workshops is available in consultation with a team member and according to each resident’s skills, experience, and safety requirements.
Some tools, equipment, or workshop areas may require prior experience or demonstrated competence. We may restrict access where safe use cannot be confirmed.
Do you provide technical instruction?
Fish Factory is a self-directed residency, not a taught programme. Residents are responsible for their own work and project execution unless something else has been agreed in writing.
Can I buy art supplies locally?
We keep some supplies at the centre that residents can purchase, including clay, glazes, primed canvas, and linoleum. We can also help residents source additional materials. Many common supplies can be ordered from Reykjavík and usually arrive within 1–3 days.
If you plan to ship materials before arrival, please contact us first.
What about customs when shipping materials?
Customs charges may apply to new imported items, and customs may request proof of purchase. If you are shipping personal tools or used materials, please state clearly on the parcel that they are your personal belongings.
Do I need a visa?
If you need a travel visa for Iceland, please apply in good time. If needed, we can provide supporting documents such as a confirmation of stay or payment statements by email.
What should I know about weather and travel in Iceland?
Weather in Iceland can change quickly in any season. Please bring warm waterproof clothing, thermal layers, and sturdy shoes or boots.
If you are planning to drive in Iceland, always check weather and road conditions before travelling, especially outside the summer season.
What about healthcare and pharmacies?
There are healthcare centres in the municipality, and we can help you make an appointment if needed. If you take prescription medication regularly, please make sure you bring enough for your stay.
What power plugs are used in Iceland?
Iceland uses the common European type C plug with 220–240 V power.
