Lana is an artist from Gent (Belgium) and stayed with us in Residency for the month of March in 2016. Her works are usually wall drawings, taking inspiration from geometry and conceptualism. During her stay she worked with 3D forms and the representation of rocks in photography and through computer work. Following the same ideas she did an amazing installation.
David Andrew is a writer and a poet from the UK and he was an artist in Residency during March 2016. David is a member of the Green Party in UK and he spent his time here reading and writing about how to get by with less things.
Comhghan & Harry are a pair of Irish gemstones who joined us up for a week in the month of February 2016. These geniuses brought with them music and singing and some crazy car mechanic skills! :D
Simeon is a sustainable designer and craftsman working with seaweed who stayed with us during February 2016. Originally from Liverpool, UK, In Stöðvarfjörður he worked to create pieces from local seaweeds. He created a small range of lamps and other objects from dried seaweed which did not require any other materials or adhesives. These pieces are also completely disposable, and once wet, will fall apart. Part of the beauty of these pieces is just that – they are ephemeral and can return to nature as compostable waste with just a small amount of water.
Sif Yraola, half Icelandic, half Spanish, came during the last week of February and stayed until the beginning of May 2016. Sif help with all sorts of stuff at the Centre, like organizing the Paint Storage with our friend Saga Ásgeirsdóttir (true passion), helped organizing a 3 day study visit to the Centre for all 12 year old elementary students in Fjarðabyggð and lead a workshop with her friend Chris. During her stay Sif also took care of morning meditations which many of our Residency Artist took part in with great success!
Það verður Karaoke fjör í Frystihúsinu á laugardagskvöldið 20 febrúar! Húsið opnar klukkan 21:00 og verður diskóljós, bjór og kaffi! DJ.-ÓK mun svo þeyta skífum fram á rauða nóttina með öllum bestu slögurunum! Aðgangur er ókeypis og munið… what happens on Karaoke nights, stays in Karaoke nights :)
Endilega bjóði vinum og deilið viðburðinum :)
Sjáumst!
Tom came all the way from Israel to join us up for the months of February and March 2016. Tom helped us with wiring Studio Silo, but his true passion was found when he started to clear out heaps of scrap metal and reorganize the electric workshop. He also lead a great music workshop with Vinny for the kids in Verkmenntaskóli Austurlands :)
Tom is a talented musician and he played music with us and did some jam sessions in the Concert Hall. His specialty for every dinner party was grand plates of delicious Hummus!
We are very proud and happy to announce that we received two grants from Uppbyggingarsjóð Austurlands this year. Our recording studio, Studio Silo was granted funds to finalize the building and the second grant we received to continue fixing up the building as a whole. Thank you! We are very grateful :)
Here you can find an article from Austurbrú about the Uppbyggingarsjóður Austurlands and the Grant recipients.
Elena is from Spain and came to us on a chilly morning in the beginning of January 2016. She stayed with us for 6 months and truly became a member of the Fish Factory Family. During her stay Elena took part in many events in that took place in the factory, several concerts, the Blues Festival, Karaoke nights, Open Studio Days and so on.
Elena also took part in organizing and teaching workshops with the local kids and teenagers along with our brilliant long term volunteer Raitis Bobrovs. Elena, Raitis and Una are also the funding members of the international swimming team of the Factory, International Dolphins :)
Lucy Willow is a british artist who stayed with us for the month of July 2015. She proposed to generate a new body of drawings, sound recordings and written narrative responding directly to the location. She is interested in giving form to the idea of liminal space, the imagined space of limbo, a space possibly between life and death.
Tara Benjamin is an artist from UK, who lives and works between London and Oxford. She stayed with us during the month of December 2015, looking for something new to let the “everyday” go.
She was interested in immerse herself into the landscape surroundings here and thus challenge her works, getting into much larger pieces. The physical and psychological space that would be reflected in her work played a big role in the motivation of Tara to come here.
You can see more of what she is doing and she has done:
After fitting a window in Studio Silo, Vinny, Una, Raitis and Catie gathered together the morning after to celebrate the first sunrise that could be seen from that view… and what a view. During these last dark months of the year, in November and December, the sun is such a welcoming sight to see.
Salomon Anaya og Adam Masters er bandarískir listamenn sem ferðast á hjólum um landið og setja up hjólaverkstæði hér og þar, m.a.
Catie stayed with us during the month of November 2015. She is the founding principal of the art and architecture firm, Alibi Studio and an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan. Her work and research captures spaces and material effects, focusing on the development of atmospheres through the exploration of textures, volumes, and the effects of light and darkness.Newell’s creative practice has been widely recognized for exploring design construction and materiality in relationship to location and geography, and cultural contingencies.
Before joining the University of Michigan as the Oberdick Fellow in 2009, Newell was a project designer at Office dA in Boston.
Raitis Bobrovs came to stay with us in October 2015 and originally the plan was that he would stay for the next two months… but time kept passing and Raitis kept building, and building and fixing. In all Raitis stayed with us for 9 months and it felt like loosing an arm, leg or an eye when he left us… life was not the same. Raitis became a truly dear friend and a strong backbone in our ever growing family. He is such a talented and creative person and one day… we hope he will be back and to throw some pots and build some crazy ass furniture from scrap!
Raitis did an unbelievable amount of work in the Factory, and just to mention a few, he helped us with the building of Studio Silo, completely revamped the wood workshop, raised the walls of the new ceramic workshop and bigger artist studio, managed creative workshops with Elena, fixed the roof, held our hand during some plumbing moments, threw away copious amounts of scrap metal, built doors and fitted windows and he could just about do everything! Not to mention that Raitis is also a doctor in chemistry… :) Wow.
Tomáš Lanča is a Czech gentleman who stayed with us a couple of weeks in October 2015 and along with Raitis he reorganized the storage room (which was frankly upside down) and built shelves and got everything into place. Tomáš also showed some great woodworking skills and built himself a beautiful xylophone during his stay :)
On this month’s concert we shall present Dútl from Neskaupstaður, and Moin Moin from Czech Republic. We will also follow the live acts with our house DJ, “Lightning Kane” from New Zealand, playing all the Classic dancefloor-fillers until late! Bring your dancing shoes!
Dútl are a trio of well seasoned musical craftsmen who perform a beautifully composed blend of Blues, Funk, and Rock. All instrumental but not in the veins of modern Post-Rock. It is a very Classic flavour and one that will keep your attention from straying no further than our Fish Factory stage! You can see a video here as a preview:
Magdaléna Manderlova is both a visual artist and a songwriter. Her music goes under the name “Moin Moin” and could be described as a melancholic yet enlightening projection of thick and full guitar sounds with soft yet strong vocal melodies on top. We will also have a small Exhibition of Magdaléna’s visual artworks, which she has been working on during her stay here.
Some of her tracks can be heard on her Bandcamp page HERE
We will offer coffee and beer as usual and don’t be shy to bring your own drink. Er ask for 1000 kr. entrance donation for the musicians.
The event is held so the people from the nearby area can meet, get to know each other and have fun. This is not a public event but do not hesitate to invite your friends and neighbours on Facebook and in the real world :)
Oscar is an illustrator from Taipei who stayed with us during September 2015. He studied information management in university and barely painted or do some artworks before 2011. He says he started painting in 2011 because of a heart-broken accident. Initially, he just wanted to paint something to release sorrow. In the process, he found there was so much fun in painting. He started posting works on the internet and then received some positive feedbacks. In his experience, he learned how to paint after painting. During his residency here he was interested about the melting of the Arctic Sea.
Steve is a electronic engineer from New Zealand. He is also known now as DJ. Lightning Kane, but that is a long story involving Fleetwood Mac, Whitney Houston and others alike.
Steve stayed with us for 6 weeks in September and October 2015. During that time we had a lot of fun with him and accomplished a massive amount of stuff. There is nothing that Steve can’t do and he is absolutely crazy and we absolutely love him :D
