About Fish Factory – Creative Centre
The Creative Centre is located in Stöðvarfjörður, a remote village in the East fjords of Iceland. It was established in 2011 when a group of people acquired the abandoned Fish Factory of the village. The group funded a non-profit cooperation which owns the building and manages the daily operations and business of the Centre. The Centre is an independent initiative and has no financial ties to the local municipality or the Icelandic state. All team members are volunteers still today.

The Creative Centre is an ongoing collaborative and community project and our actions and aims are based on sustainable principles and alternative methods. We want to regenerate and sustain our small village by making it into a possible and desirable place to settle – a place where you can have engaging jobs, enjoy culture, and the influx of new ideas and creative people. The Centre is meant to be a platform offering many different workshops and facilities where small initiatives can thrive and jobs can be created. We run an all year around Art Residency for most creative fields and we frequently host cultural events and concerts. Currently we are starting up workshops and study courses at the Centre. We also host a small fish processing company, the local fish market, and the Red Cross charity shop of the village.

With the Creative Centre we want to demonstrate the possibility of strengthening small, remote communities with creative initiatives, establishing jobs, and to be a source of inspiration for others alike. We believe that many small pillars and culture are a strong way to ensure the livelihood of a society and are just as valid as big industrial solution.

    Benjamin Whitney Buhl

Benjamin Whitney Buhl is a third–year MFA program student at University of South Florida, USA, specialises in Multidisciplinary program in found object sculpting. Ben choose our Factory for Residency because of, as he says ‘Vibe’ – he was feeling really fitting in our ‘always in progress’ mood.

‘The less distractions – the better for the residency’ he says. This is why Iceland was a good country to book residency in – just silence in artistic chaos. Ben was getting energy from fjord’s mountains that surround residency and getting greener and greener everyday he stayed here. The endless openness of Atlantic Ocean at the end of the fjord was one of the ‘extremely intensely beautiful’ things that Ben did not expect before his arrival..

Full story from Ben’s lips in interview bellow:

    Thank you Ben!

    Nele Moeller

IMG_0127Nele is a contemporary artist from Hamburg, Germany. She stayed with us during the months of May, June and July 2016. Her field of work is new media, from installations made with textile, to works of photography, audio and video. During her period of residency she did a lot of audio recordings in the surroundings and started to make an science-fiction audioplay, connected to the nature of Iceland. Also she took a lot of photographs and was fascinated by the strange fog of Stödvafjördur that inspired her very much to pick up the pencils and draw again.

    Thank you Nele!

    – – –

This Tuesday evening (12th July) come and meet a group of seven artists from our twin project the Fish Factory art space in Falmouth, a small town in the south west of England. Rose Hatcher, the founder of the project will speak about the English Fish Factory from 8pm and there will be some music, artwork and soup for everyone. We hope to see you there.

Both projects started in 2011 in remote disused fish factories – Rósa and Rose have been in touch ever since. In 2015 Rosa and Una visited the Fish Factory in Falmouth and shared their experiences. Now the English Fish group have come to Iceland to continue the exchange.

17JUNE ROCK the BOAT! Teitur Magnússon & Prins Póló

    Rock the Boat poster
    Rock the Boat poster

A free concert on 17th June in Breiðdalsvík, on an old boat which sits on the land in the centre of the town. On this day, the National Celebration day of Iceland, two household names shall take to the stage. Neither need much introduction!…

Teitur Magnússon is a beatiful songwriter of effortless melody and verse. Last year he was nominated for the Nordic Music Prize along with Björk. His tracks were always on National Radio after the album’s release, and his songs have become the blissful earworms of all but a few Icelanders! When the time to Rock the Boat comes around, Teitur will be accompanied by his Eastern backing band comprising of Jón Knútur Ásmundsson on drums, Vinny Vamos on Bass, and Dóri Waren on keyboards. You will sing, you will dance, it will be beautiful!…

Prins Póló has gained the status of nothing short of Pop legend over the past years. In 2014 alone he got Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and even made it onto a film soundtrack! The music is Pop but with wonderfully raw and simple edges to it. Lyrically brilliant with a whit that is rarely heard in today’s music releases. He will grace the stage with full band and keep it kicking until the finish. You will dance and dance some more, you will be merry, it will be spectacular!!!!

    Marine Schneider

Marine Schneider is an illustrator from Brussels, Belgium. She came to the Fish Factory as an Artist in Residency in June 2016 with a specific project in mind, but the impact that the surrounding landscapes and the factory itself had on her made her change her mind completely. She started to experiment with wood, by turning her drawings on paper into 3D sculptures made out of leftovers wood. Quickly, the sculptures became less and less controlled and more and more inspired by the shapes of the pieces of wood she could find.

IMG_0116Lavinia Hanachiuc is a Romanian-born ceramic artist and fine art photographer. She stayed with us during May 2016. Her work originates from an organic mélange of eastern European folklore and superstitions, Latin blood and memories from a childhood lived under an oppressive political regime. Her work is at times following the materials and it’s very short lived , designed to interact with the audience at community events.    Hanachiuc  has resided in the United States since completing her university studies and has continued to create art and teach the thrill of chasing ideas and making beautiful objects to a wide audience. She is based in Ann Arbor , Mi.

    Marisa Molin

    13248405_1048201355272473_7601859296031562098_o

Marisa is a contemporary jeweller and artist from Tasmania, Australia but currently lives in Norway. She undertook a residency in May 2016 to research the coastline of the east coast of Iceland. Her practice focuses on the appropriation and translation of textures and fragments, collected from walks along island shorelines. What is found is an interesting reflection on the island’s coast. Often it explores migration, plastic debris from industry, geology, marine life etc. Marisa takes the fragments and their secret narratives in the studio and translates them into wearable objects.

By doing so, she creates a collective and visual dialogue about an island, as each island is unique.
